25 Ways to Show Reverence for God

1167176_54598022

It helps me to approach Jesus with proper reverence when I think about Him in this passage of Scripture:

…among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: β€œDo not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:13-18

Ways we can show respect and honor to God:

  1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength remembering that Jesus says that those who love Him will obey Him.
  2. Love others with God’s love.
  3. Yield yourself fully to Him as Lord and Master in every area of your life – holding nothing back. Submit to Him.
  4. Exalt Him far above anyone or anything else in your life. Make Him more important than anything or anyone.
  5. Praise Him joyfully with spoken or written words! Sing to Him with all your heart!
  6. Thank Him all throughout the day.
  7. Desire to know Him deeply. Feast on His Word
  8. Trust and believe Him!
  9. Be still before Him in anticipation rather than rushing ahead with your own plans.
  10. Reverence that He holds all power and that He reigns in sovereignty over the universe.
  11. Receive that God’s Word is Truth and Life. Reject every other message as false, resist the lies of the enemy, and build your life on His Truth and His Word alone! Think rightly about God, yourself, and others.
  12. Ask God to show you any sin in your heart so He can empower you to get rid of it and maintain fellowship with Him.
  13. Desire to live a holy and obedient life – not by your power, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working in you.
  14. Hate sin the way He does.
  15. Hunger to learn more about His wisdom, His Word, and His character.
  16. Delight yourself in the Lord in good times and in times of suffering, trusting Him to use the good and bad things for your ultimate good and His ultimate glory.
  17. Approach Him with great humility and lowliness, realizing He is King of kings and Lord of lords and you are “made of clay.”
  18. Acknowledge that He is the Greatest Treasure there is. Nothing on earth can compare with Him.
  19. Allow Him to transform you to be more like Jesus.
  20. Love the Body of Christ and work for the love and unity of His people.
  21. Acknowledge that God’s wisdom is infinitely greater than any human wisdom. Trust Him more than self.
  22. Seek God’s approval alone, not the approval of people or the world.
  23. Ask God to give You His eyes, His heart, and His mind.
  24. Mediate on His Word. Memorize it.
  25. Be willing to do anything He asks of you with joy just because it brings Him pleasure.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” Romans 6:23. On our own, what we earn is hell, not heaven, according to the Bible because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. Β If you do not have Christ as Savior and Lord and you realize you are not right with God (which none of us are apart from Jesus) and you want to receive His gift of love and Life, you can choose Him today! Let me know if you want to talk more about this. πŸ™‚

Thankfully, God loves us too much to leave us hopeless and helpless, even though we fall so far short of His standard of perfection. He is holy and just and cannot ignore our sin debt. Someone must pay in order for there to be justice. That is why God came Himself in the form of Jesus Christ to pay the price for the things we have done wrong in God’s sight so that we can have a relationship with Him and be with Him now and forever. Β When we receive Christ and all He has done for us, He puts our sin in Jesus’ account and His righteousness in our account.

β€œThe gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” – Timothy Keller

This is not a list of ways to earn salvation or to “earn God’s love.” It is not about legalism or checking boxes. This post is about the kinds of things we want to do because we have new life in Christ and we love Him and long to honor Him in every way we possibly can. Each suggestion is based on Scripture. If we are in Christ, He has brought us from spiritual death to spiritual life!

Everything good in us is about His finished work on the cross on our behalf almost 2000 years ago and His work in us daily. He changes our hearts so that we want more and more of Him and we want more of all of the things that draw us to His heart. Our old sinful nature was crucified on the cross and buried with Christ. We are raised to life with a new nature in Christ and now we are alive to God and no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6)! Our job is to love Him, trust Him, receive all He has for us, and to yield control to Him as Lord. He gave all of Himself for us in love, now we give all of ourselves to Him in love.

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27

  1. The song I’ve been listening to a ton is from Natalie Grant’s new album. I wish there was a video or song link I could post, but there isn’t. So here are the words and maybe you can listen to a clip on itunes if the words speak to you:

I know if you wanted to you could wave your hand
Spare me this heartache and change your plan
And I know any second you could take my pain away
But even if you don’t I pray

Help me want the Healer more than the healing
Help me want the Savior more than the saving
Help me want the Giver more than the giving
Help me want you Jesus more than anything

You know more than anyone that my flesh is weak
And you know I’d give anything for a remedy
And I’ll ask a thousand more times to set me free today
Oh but even if you don’t I pray

Help me want the Healer more than the healing
Help me want the Savior more than the saving
Help me want the Giver more than the giving

Oh Help me want you Jesus more than anything

When I’m desperate and my hearts overcome
all that I need you’ve already done
When I’m desperate and my hearts overcome
all that I need you’ve already done

Oh Jesus Help me want you more than anything

Help me want the Healer more than the healing
Help me want the Savior more than the saving
Help me want the Giver more than the giving
Help me want you Jesus more than anything
Help me want you Jesus more than anything

  2. Here is another song off of the same album that also talks about respecting God… This album is awesome. I’ve been listening to it tons.

  3. Thanks for this post – I’m using this post for our family devotional this morning smile smile πŸ™‚

I wondered what and my 3 boys would study to start another home education day and then your email arrived just in time for us.

    Thanks for your continual encouragement!

One conclusion we came to as we reflected on the 25 ways to reverence God, was the importance of knowing that we are like Jesus; that we were deliberately and purposefully made in His image, which means we all reflect some part of God and make up some part of the fuller picture of God.

If we are each one piece of that jigsaw, then the more jigsaw pieces we have around us, the better the image of God becomes. (The idea of coals in a fire sprang immediately to mind at that point too).

Thought I’d share one of our thoughts with you and thanks again for the subject of our devotion this morning.

    1. Andy Berry,

Thank you very much for sharing the insights y’all had in your discussion. I like the idea of us being pieces of a puzzle and when we are united as the Body, we reflect God more clearly.

  4. Beautiful! So well said. I think trust is a big one.”Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Trust that He will work all things for good. Trust that even when it appears as if all is lost, God can hand us beauty for ashes.

  5. I feel like I’m out of having faith… I read these and try to take them to heart but sometimes I wonder if I am missing being told to walk away or what the best action to take is…

Last night I was enjoying the evening with my husband and we were watching videos on his phone, and randomly his facebook ends up popping up and taking over the screen and I asked him if he was on facebook (he has said he isn’t) and he said, kind of. I sat next to him and looked at it, he had put up a photo of just him, lists himself as single, has added single women as friends.

I asked him why he was doing this and what was going on with it, and he said, oh, did I do that? oh, yes, I guess I did… I was just checking who was on there, who would add me as a friend.

I lost my cool, I was so hurt and upset by this, I tried to stay calm and respectful, but I just told him how could I believe any of it when he is dishonest about it? How could I believe he isn’t doing something disloyal when he hides it? He said he didn’t tell me about doing it because he knew I’d be upset… I just feel so confused and lost again. I am trying to pray for more patience and guidance through all this, but I’m feeling like walking away or seperating for a while is what I should do, I don’t feel like I know him anymore. He hasn’t even told his parents/family we are married, and we are now recently found out that we are expecting our first child.

I feel like I am unloved, I am seen as something to be ashamed of, I know that that’s not right, it’s just difficult… How can I allow him to be present with our child as a father if he is dishonest and dishonorable? I don’t want him/her to feel their father is ashamed or secretive about them, it would be very damaging. Also to have a mother who distrusts the father…

I’m sorry to unload my burden on you again, April, I just feel I have little support right now…

    1. Camellia,

      Congratulations on your baby!

Yikes. He is listing himself as single on FB? πŸ™ And he still hasn’t told his family you are married? Would you be able to please remind me, have you met them?

I can completely understand why any wife would be hurt by these things. I think you are experiencing righteous anger and jealousy based on what you are describing.

Has he talked about when he is going to share the news with his family that y’all are married? I really don’t understand that. What is his relationship like with his parents? You live near them, correct?

Was he willing to repent of what he did on FB?

Did he seem to acknowledge that what he did with FB was wrong?

Have y’all had any godly counseling together as a couple before or after marriage?

      Much love to you!

  6. Something I have been thinking about that I posted on my Peaceful Wife Blog FB page today:

A few weeks ago, I shared a post by Laura Doyle about how femininity can be summed up in one word – “receiving.” She talked about that the most attractive quality about femininity is a woman who receives graciously and with joy.

God designed the husband to be the giver and the wife to be the receiver in the physical act of intimacy in marriage. But this is a picture of other aspects of masculinity and femininity, as well, in marriage. The dynamics tend to work best when the husband graciously and selflessly gives to bless his wife and his wife joyfully and willingly receives his gifts of love with admiration, respect, and honor. A husband gives of himself fully to his wife and she responds by giving herself fully to him.

The deepest picture in all of this is that God designed marriage to be a living picture of Jesus and His church where He is the Giver and we are the receivers. How I pray we will receive all of Jesus and all that He has provided for us with great joy! I don’t want us to miss out on anything He has already so selflessly, lovingly, and willingly provided for us at such a great cost to Himself.

  7. Just last night we had such good teaching about Christ in us at our church’s Women’s Night. This is such a different way of thinking than most of us grew up with. But just because we grew up with it and are used to it – doesn’t make it true! (Jesus has this peculiar love of getting us out of our comfort zones, doesn’t He?)

Our speaker has said over and over – WE are the Body of Christ. Look at what Christ did with His body when He was on earth. He loved. He preached, He healed, He was compassionate and reached out to the lost, hurting, sick, dying, hopeless and poor. He rebuked the enemy, the proud, the people who thought they had it all together. He cast out demons (yep they are real and a big problem for people). He left no room for lies, excuses, the love of money, selfishness or half-hearted following of the Way. He always pointed to the Father. He only did what His Father did, and only said what His Father said. He humbled Himself and laid down His life for us. He served His disciples. He rebuked fevers and He raised the dead. He was filled with the Spirit for His whole ministry. He did nothing on His own. He was completely surrendered and completely obeyed His Father, even when it hurt or was uncomfortable or death for the joy set before Him. He had all wisdom. He was full of all joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, patience, love. His anger was only righteous.

That – all of that! and even more – is still what Jesus wants to do through His Body today! And He can. And He does all over the world! And the amazing thing is He will in us if we let Him! He wants to do this in us! When the Body is healthy, with every part working properly, held together by every joint and building itself up in love towards the Head, which is Christ – He is all and in all. He fills His Body with Himself as we die to self and submit to Him and learn to listen and be filled with Him and not us and not stuff and not junk.

As believers, we have Christ in us. We have His Spirit. So we really have to get rid of the idea that Christ is only way up in heaven, and we are here alone trying hard to do things for Him.

He is ONE with us. We are ONE with Him. We are In Christ and In the Father and the Spirit and they are in us at all times. We have the infinite Spirit with all of the attributes of Christ in us already – but we aren’t used to acting like it or receiving it or utilizing it. We are used to doing things ourselves. But He is always praying for us! He is always with us! He is always for us and fighting for us and our marriages and families.

It’s not just you praying for your husband, broken marriage or hurting friend – Christ is right with you praying too! It’s not just you going to speak to a person who needs to hear truth and be set free – Christ is with you! He has already given you everything that is His. His mind, heart, eyes, wisdom, every spiritual gift in the heavenly places. It is absolutely impossible for us to do what He did when He was here on earth without us understanding these things and without Him working through us. But He said the gates of hell will not stand against His Church. That’s us! That is where we have to get to- who we have to be.

It’s time for us to wake up, to look out of the pits and prisons we have been stuck in for decades (and that the Western Church has been in for 100’s of years in general). To look UP – that is where our Help comes from! Most of us have been asleep to things of Christ. We have stayed sleepy infants on milk when He has been urging us on to meat and maturity!! To be healed and set free and ready to be who He made us to be in Him. He only works through His Church – His Body. We get to be part of what He is doing against the enemy and to build up His Church in the gathering darkness. But as the darkness increases – so will the Light, and His Spirit is pouring out mightily all over the world right now. We can be part of that! We are His kids! We get to boast in Him.

Praise Him today! He is at work and He is so Good and Amazing and Infinite and Wise!!

  8. Just wanted to let you know I love what you wrote in “25 Ways to Show Reverence for God” it is excellent and so inspiring. I have shared it with family members and will continue to share, it is so good!

Thank you April, you are a dear, sweet sister in the Lord.

  9. Hi April
This is my very first time to comment, even though I am about two years old in this blog. I love this post dearly. My desire is to love the Father intimately. I read this post and it touched my heart and draws me more to my desire. Thank you so much. I love the fact that you point us to the Father all the time, and I cherish your humility.

You will be surprised to learn that you reach people as far as Botswana. That is where I am from. Hope you will google and see where my beloved country is situated…hahaha.

You are a sweet sister and you encourage me a lot. Though I am not very active in commenting, I am VERY active in reading and am always looking forward to your next post. Keep up the good and God bless you more.

    1. Gee,

It is such a pleasure to meet you, my precious sister! I can’t wait to give you a big hug one day! Thank you for sharing that this was a blessing to you. I love your heart for God. SO beautiful! It is an answer to many prayers to hear that God is blessing you here.

I looked up Botswana on the map. It is amazing that we get to have contact with each other from America all the way to Africa – and we are both sitting in our own homes. I could never have imagined this kind of communication when I was in high school before the internet was around. What a blessing!!! πŸ™‚

      Much love to you!

  10. Thank you, April, for your humble service in the Body of Christ. I love this such an important post, and looking forward to your next ones πŸ™‚

My grandmother is on hospice and won't be with us much longer (11-30-16). I will get to comments when I am able to but I need to be with family right now. Thanks for understanding.
