Praying Scripture

One of the most powerful ways to pray is to pray Scripture over ourselves, our husbands and others – in faith – believing that God is a Promise Maker and a Promise Keeper.

I love what David Platt says about praying when we are abiding in Christ and full of His Spirit:

“Change your desires to want what God wants. Then… ask for anything you want!”

Jesus places no limits on the possibilities and potential and power of prayer. We are the ones who do that by our unbelief and small faith. For Him, the sky is the limit. When we are abiding in Him, seeking His will, and living in submission to Him, He invites us to “ask for whatever you will, and it will be given to you.”  In fact, Jesus often says, “According to your faith, it will be done to you.”  So, as we have greater and greater faith, we will see Jesus do greater and greater miracles in our lives and in the lives of others. What an incredible privilege and responsibility to come before God in faith, boldness and confidence and to be part of Jesus’ kingdom coming on earth as it does in heaven!

This is ALL about Jesus and our great faith in Him!

——

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.  If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. John 15:1-17

——

Notice that “whatever you ask in My Name” comes only when we are walking in and living in total obedience to God and we are abiding in Christ, full of His Spirit and power – these promises do not apply if we are cherishing sin in our hearts, praying with selfish motives or living independently from Christ. When we want what God wants, and we seek what God seeks, we know that we have what we ask for – if our motives and hearts are right with Him.

One of my favorite ways to pray in power is to pray scriptures – to pray the prayers of the apostles, prophets and psalmists, and to pray God’s promises back to Him in order to see them blossom and bear fruit in my life – and in your lives!

Here is a fantastic place for us to start. Let’s pray this passage of scripture together over ourselves, our husbands and our brothers and sisters here on the blog:

Colossians 1:9-29

Lord,

We come together in one accord, in the power of Your Spirit, seeking Your will and Your glory and Your kingdom as we pray for ourselves, our husbands and our sisters (and brothers) here on the blog:

  • That God might fill us with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
  • That we might live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way.
  • That we might bear fruit in every good work.
  • That we might grow in the knowledge of God.
  • That we might be strengthened with all power according to His glorious might.
  • That we might have great endurance.
  • That we might have great patience.
  • That we might joyfully give thanks to the Father who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of Light.
  • That we might acknowledge that Jesus is the Head of all things and holds all authority and all power and is the Firstborn of all creation and that He has created all things for Himself.
  • That we might live out the peace Jesus has made for us with God through the blood He shed on the cross.
  • That Christ might be supreme in our lives in every way!
  • That we might be holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation.
  • That we might rejoice in our sufferings as we share in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the church.
  • That we might present the Word of God in its fullness to those around us
  • That we might know the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in us, the hope of glory!
  • That we might each labor in Christ’s kingdom, struggling with all of His energy which so powerfully works in us to accomplish His purposes in His body.

Some other great passages to pray:

The Psalms

Ephesians 1:17-23

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 3:12-21

in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in HimTherefore I ask you not to lose heart at my tribulations on your behalf, for they are your glory. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 6:10-20

II Thessalonians 1:11-12

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
